This breed was referred to as Deutscher Schäferhund, which
means "German Shepherd Dog" because its original purpose was assisting shepherds in herding and protecting sheep. I'm sure some GSD families have
been herded by their dogs at some point.
Prized for intelligence and loyalty. The breed grew in popularity in the United States shortly after
World War I, when stories of the heroic dog's work at the front were told by returning soldiers. Even today, this breed is
a standard in security and protection for our soldiers, as many K-9 units serve abroad as bomb detection teams. They keep
our soldiers safe and give them good company in hard times. To honor those brave teams, we have run a program called Bruno Packs (named after our K-9 Bruno) to give these teams care packages. For their service, we want to
give them comfort till they return home. German Shepherds are very smart and also very funny. This video showcases this perfectly.

Iraq. The scrawny dog had been abused by the Iraqi military but became a well trained sentry dog, protecting US soldiers in
Operation Iraqi Freedom. Fluffy was able to enjoy his well deserved retirement in the United States.

- Clipper was former US President John Kennedy's dog. The German Shepherd
was a strong protector of Jackie. When asked by the press what Clipper liked to eat, she replied, "Reporters."

He was a family pet that also starred as himself in the "Roy Rogers Show."
